Peter Tenganabang Nanfuri, who served as the head of the police force during the administration of Jerry John Rawlings, and the Paramount Chief of the Jirapa Traditional Area has reportedly passed away.

The former IGP reportedly passed away on February 16, 2023, at the age of 81. Peter Tenganabang Nanfuri was the Paramount Chief of the Jirapa Traditional Area with the title Naa Ansoleh Ganaa II.

Nanfuri worked for the Ghana Police Service in many different roles. He was the head of the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) in 1986, a government agency that deals with issues of national security. The police department promoted him to the inspector general in 1996. When his term as IGP was winding down, he was under intense pressure to do something about the repeated murders of women in Ghana. John Kufuor took over as IGP soon after he became President of Ghana.

Peter Nanfuri became the fourth Paramount chief of the Jirapa Traditional Area on July 23, 2005. On April 28, 2007, he was officially inaugurated into his new position at Jirapa’s Naa Yelpoe Park. His official, royal name or title is Naa Ansoleh Ganaa II. The first Naa Ansoleh Ganaa was chosen by the British colonial government and given the stool name Naa Ansoleh Ganaa I. Nanfuri was his great-grandson. The previous Paramount Chief, Bapereyiri Yelpore, had died seven years earlier. Even though Nanfuri’s father was a chief, he had to compete with some cousins for this position.
