The leaders of Fix the Country movement have exposed the ruling government for allegedly trying to bribe them with a whopping $1 million to halt their demonstration.
In a post shared on the group’s official page on Twitter, the group alleged that a cabinet minister met with them and tried to coerce them to back down on their proposed protest with the aforementioned amount, but they rejected it since they wanted a better Ghana.
The post reads:
Since they want it this way we will talk . The cabinet promised us $1 million if only we can stop the demonstration. We rejected! We want a better Ghana 🇬🇭💔
Fix The Country is a non-partisan group that demands accountability, good governance, and better living conditions from the government. In 2021, they hit the street for the first time holding placards with inscriptions, including: ‘“We deserve better too, fix the country”, “We are suffering, we need jobs”, “Young people cannot pay rent, fix the country”, “Reduce fuel and gas prices”, “Where are the 88 hospitals Nana Addo?”, among many others.
During that particular protest, a 67-year-old man who held a placard with the inscription: “No to revisionism. Nkrumah remains founder”, said he was not happy with the change of the Founders Day, which was celebrated every September 21 to mark the birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah to the present Founders’ Day marked every August 4 to celebrate the various founders of the country.
By 6 a.m., a sizable crowd of protesters had gathered at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, while others had been transported by bus to take part in the demonstration. Most of them were dressed in red and black, and while some of them used whistles and sirens to organize and control the thronging people, others could be seen shouting into microphones and miniature speakers.
Around 8 a.m., the protesters began walking along their predetermined routes and passed through Kwame Nkrumah Avenue on their way to the Farisco Traffic Lights, the TUC Traffic Intersection on their way to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) at Accra Central, and the Black Star Square on their way back.
