Adina has shared her belief that establishing a Female Artiste of the Year category is unnecessary, highlighting the importance of not creating a deliberate separation between male and female artists.
She argues that the number of male musicians exceeds that of their female counterparts, which naturally places them at an advantage when vying for various awards at the esteemed Ghana Music Awards sponsored by Telecel.
The Ghanaian singer stated that she prefers the fulfilment of winning alongside both men and women in any category, especially for the prestigious Artiste of the Year award, and she does not support the idea of a separate category for female artists.
She shared her perspective during an interview on Property FM, located in Cape Coast.
While expressing her point, Adina stated; “Honestly I feel like the reason why the comparison keeps coming is because the men are more than the women generally in the music industry.
“That’s why most people think that we should create a separate category for females but I don’t want to be the best of women but I want to be the best overall.
“So for me when I see the men doing well it also inspires me to put in my best so that I’ll also get to somewhere just like Ebony won Artiste of the Year though it was a posthumous award,” she added.
“A Gospel musician like Diana Hamilton also won which was nice to see and that is how it should be so I don’t think it’s necessary to separate that kind of category.
I think we should just make it general and it should continue to encourage or empower women to want to do more to be able to rub shoulders with our male counterparts because it is possible,” she opined on the show.
Several experts, including musicians such as Eno Barony, have advocated for the establishment of a Female Artiste of the Year category to enhance women’s opportunities for winning awards and to boost their self-esteem.
The argument is that the industry is predominantly male-dominated, resulting in men winning the majority of awards, which consequently leads to women feeling undervalued and overlooked.
