Ghanaian rapper Edem has urged fellow artistes to focus on the financial aspect of their careers, emphasizing that the music industry is fundamentally a business.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb on December 22, 2024, at Stonebwoy’s Bhim Fest, Edem shared his perspective on the balance between earning recognition and achieving financial sustainability in the music industry.
“What I would pressure every artiste about is making a lot of money,” he stated. “Because it is a music business, and it’s money that is making all the other people thrive.
“We should endeavour to make sure that our craft is making a lot of money.”
The rapper’s comments come amidst growing discussions about the priorities of African artistes, many of whom strive for international recognition through awards and accolades.

While acknowledging the importance of such honours, Edem was quick to point out that they should not overshadow an artiste’s financial health and the ability to maintain a loyal fan base.
“I haven’t seen it anywhere that it is called ‘Show Awards.’ Awards are honours given to men, and it’s nice to be appreciated,” he said.
“But your number one award is to be loved unconditionally by your fans so your longevity is guaranteed.”
Bhim Fest, an annual event hosted by Stonebwoy, is known for celebrating Ghanaian music and creating opportunities for artists to connect with their fans.
