Due to the nature of the initial connection between teacher and student, some have been subject to public scrutiny and controversy. Most people think it’s not a good idea for teachers to get too close to their students because of ethical and power issues. Some examples are as follows:
Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron: The current French President, Emmanuel Macron, first became acquainted with Brigitte Trogneux, his future wife, while he was a student in her drama class in high school. Despite the age difference, they married and have been together for many years.
Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau: One of the most well-known cases, Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher, had a controversial relationship with her student, Vili Fualaau. They later married after Letourneau’s legal troubles subsided.
Celine Dion and René Angélil: Celine Dion, the renowned singer, met her future husband René Angélil when she was 12, and he was her manager and mentor. They married in 1994 and remained married until Angélil’s death in 2016.
Doug Hutchison and Courtney Stodden: Actor Doug Hutchison married Courtney Stodden when she was 16 years old. Stodden, who later became a reality TV personality, was originally Hutchison’s student in an online acting class.
