The Ukrainian metal scene is grieving the loss of Mykola Sostin, known as Amorth, a 39-year-old drummer who was killed in action while serving in the Ukrainian army.
Amorth, widely respected in the metal community for his contributions to bands such as Drudkh, Soom, and Nokturnal Mortum, passed away earlier this week in Ukraine’s ongoing defense against Russian forces.

In August 2024, Amorth joined the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade of the Airborne Assault Forces, bringing his dedication from the music scene into military service. His passing was publicly shared by Oleksii Kovalev, the guitarist from the band Zavod, who honored Amorth’s memory in a heartfelt Instagram post.

Kovalev described him as “one of the best drummers of Ukraine” and a significant figure in Ukrainian black metal, recognizing him as “an ambassador of joy on Earth” whose legacy will endure among fans and friends.
Amorth’s impact on the metal community, both through his music and his sacrifice, leaves a profound void as fans, friends, and fellow musicians remember his contributions to Ukrainian metal and his dedication to his country.
