Greater Manchester Police have charged former England rugby league player Gareth Hock with rape, assault, and controlling or coercive behaviour.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed Saturday afternoon that Hock has been remanded in custody.

This comes after Hock was charged with controlling and coercive behaviour as well as two driving violations earlier this month.

He is set to face the new charges before the courts at a later date.

The force’s Wigan Police team said: “Gareth Hock (05/09/1983), from Wigan, has been charged with multiple offenses, including rape, assault, and controlling or coercive behaviour, among others.

“He has been remanded in custody and will appear at court at a later date.”

As part of the earlier allegations filed against him, it is alleged that Hock, as the driver of a car involved in a traffic collision, failed to report the incident.

It is also accused that, as the driver of a vehicle, he failed to stop after a road accident.

These two accusations stem from an accident involving an Audi A6 on Orrell’s Gathurst Road on November 11, 2017.

In February, Hock appeared before the Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the two driving counts.

After playing for Wigan Warriors, Leigh Centurions, Salford Red Devils, Widnes Vikings, Featherstone Rovers, and Barrow Raiders, Hock resigned from rugby league in 2019. He earned nine England caps during his career.

Hock is accused of committing heinous crimes that carry severe punishments if he is proved guilty. Considering the brutal nature of rugby league, the charges of rape and assault are especially disturbing. The charge of controlling or coercive behaviour is likewise a serious offense with long-lasting consequences for the victim.
