A post from The Carter Center on social media says that former President Jimmy Carter will get hospice care at home instead of going to the hospital. 

The Center, a foundation founded by Carter, announced on Saturday that the former president had undergone a series of brief hospitalizations prior to electing to “spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.”

The statement went on to say “He has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers.“

The social media post did not indicate what the 98-year-old was being treated for.

However, Tru News Report surmises that the apparent conclusion is that Carter is on his final legs and may pass away soon; that’s what hospice care typically signifies, so tributes to his legacy and well-wishes are flooding social media right now.

In August 2015, Carter had a tiny malignant liver tumor removed. The next year, Carter declared he no longer required cancer therapy because an experimental medicine had eradicated all traces of the disease.

In 2019, Carter suffered a hard fall that left him rattled and in need of stitches. At the same time, he had surgery to relieve pressure in his brain caused by internal bleeding caused by the same fall. 

Carter celebrated his most recent birthday in October with family and friends in Plains, Georgia, the small town where he and his wife, Rosalynn, were born between World War I and the Great Depression.

Carter, who was known for his Christian faith, taught Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains well into his nineties.

The Carter Center, which was founded by the 39th president and former first lady following their single stint in the White House, celebrated its 40th anniversary of supporting democracy and conflict resolution, monitoring elections, and boosting public health in developing nations last year.

Jimmy Earl Carter Jr. won the 1976 presidential election after beginning his campaign as an obscure, one-term governor of Georgia. His unexpected performance in the Iowa caucuses elevated the little state in the Midwest to the focus of presidential politics. Carter went on to defeat Gerald R. Ford in the general election, largely because he swept the South before his home area swung heavily to the Republican Party.

In 1980, he was defeated by the Republican candidate Ronald Reagan.
