Former President John Mahama‘s special assistant, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, has disclosed the Ex-Gratia payments he has been receiving since he left office in 2020.

She claims that John Dramani Mahama is being paid a monthly pension of Gh22,000 in addition to an ex-gratia payment of Gh250,000. “Mahama has received his ex-gratia, he received a lump sum of Gh¢250,000 as ex-gratia and takes Gh¢22,000 as monthly pension pay.” She said.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to eliminate the payment of ex-gratia to executive members if he is re-elected in 2024.

John Mahama stated during the opening of his campaign on March 2 at the Cedi Auditorium of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, Volta Region, that he will take the required steps to eliminate the payment as soon as he enters office.

“We will continue and bring to a conclusion the constitutional review process begun by President Atta Mills, including a review of the controversial Article 71 to reduce the number of office holders, and remove the disparities in privileges and emoluments between the public and civil service. The payment of ex-gratia to members of the executive under Article 71 will be scrapped,” he said.

Dan Kwaku Yeboah advised former president John Dramani Mahama to return any ex-gratia he received during his time in office to show Ghanaians that he is prepared to do away with the advantages of Article 71 office holders if he is re-elected.

Responding to this, John Dramani Mahama said he is unable to repay his retirement benefits at this time since he is now a “pensioner” with no other sources of income.
