Every Leader is Guilty of Galamsey Crisis Over 35 Years- Okyeame Kwame

Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame has weighed in on the ongoing illegal mining (galamsey) crisis in a message he shared on X.

His message calls for collective responsibility and condemns the politicization of galamsey, a practice that continues to ravage Ghana’s environment.

In the wake of recent protests against illegal mining and the subsequent arrests of demonstrators, Okyeame Kwame didn’t mince words.

He asserted that the environmental damage caused by galamsey is a national disgrace, implicating not just the current government but all past leaders and influential figures who have allowed the practice to persist for over 35 years.

“Let’s not politicize Galamsey,” Okyeame Kwame declared. “Every president of Ghana for the past 35 years is guilty of this environmental crime.

Every chief or landowner who allows this crime is guilty. Every minister of health and environmentalist who keeps quiet is guilty. Every activist like me who keeps quiet is guilty.”

Meanwhile, the arrest of protestors participating in the recent #StopGalamseyNow demonstration has sparked outrage and concern among Ghanaians who are passionate about protecting the environment.

Many believe the government has failed to effectively combat illegal mining, while others view the arrests as an attempt to silence public dissent.

Okyeame Kwame’s comments bring attention to the urgent need for collective responsibility.

He stressed that the ongoing destruction of Ghana’s natural resources should not be seen as a political issue but as a national emergency that affects everyone.

He further urged activists and ordinary citizens to rise and hold those responsible accountable for the ongoing damage.

“It’s time to stop this national disgrace,” he concluded, calling on Ghanaians from all walks of life, including government officials, traditional leaders, and citizens, to unite in the fight against galamsey and to prevent further environmental degradation.
