A former NDC Member of Parliament for Kumbugu, Ras Mubarak, has backed the party’s decision to make changes to its parliamentary leadership.

The NDC’s announcement of the changes which removed key members like Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka Mubarak from their positions has caused serious disagreements.

In a Facebook post on Friday, January 27, Ras Mubarak said the dissatisfied members should focus their energies on working for victory in 2024.

“The decision to appoint new party leaders in parliament won’t be reversed. No amount of petitions and press conferences would change that. Better we focus energies on winning political power and help build our country. Prime Minister Theresa May and Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn moved from the front Bench to the back bench. Heavens did not break loose. We can’t build a strong party with this entitlement mentality. We have a duty to help Ato Forson and his team succeed as our new party Leaders in parliament.”

According to the outgoing Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the affected leaders and the minority caucus were not consulted on the decision.

Together with over 70 MPs, they have petitioned the party to suspend the changes until broader consultations are done.

Mr. Muntaka, who addressed a news conference on Thursday urged the new leaders to pull a break on their activities until the right thing is done.

Meanwhile, the other half of NDC MPs have also reportedly signed a petition to back the decision.

Party Chairman and General Secretary have defended the decision saying it is in the best interest of the party.

Among other things, the party chair, Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the 2024 election will largely be about the economy. For this reason, he says the party had to put forward its best foot.

He has however noted that the past leaders will still be called upon to serve the party in other capacities. So far, the immediate past Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, has not spoken about the changes.

According to the new minority leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, he has had some discussion with his predecessor. Mr. Forson says he will work to unite the caucus for the party’s larger interest.

The new leaders are expected to start work on February 7, 2023, when parliament returns from recess.
