The former boss of the defunct UT Bank and UT Holdings, Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has made it clear that he will be casting his vote for John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming general elections.
Despite his affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the past, Mr Amoabeng openly expressed his support for Mahama and explained the reasons behind his decision.
He believes that it is time to give the former president another opportunity to lead the country, despite his past support for the governing NPP.
Amoabeng shared his perspective during an interview on Kofi TV, emphasizing that his choice is influenced by his 7-year experience since the NPP assumed power in 2016.
“I wasn’t NDC as such. In fact, my sister was the MP for our area and she was Deputy Minister for Education until the recent reshuffle and of course I have to support my sister. So people in the NDC think I am NPP but the thing about this is that my genuine friends are in the NDC even though I didn’t support them in the past
“I think we made a wrong experiment and next time I have to make the right choice. So now knowing Mahama and knowing what the NPP has done, I think I have to go fully behind NDC and Mahama to see what he can do for us in his second coming.”
During a recent interview in January, Prince Kofi Amoabeng expressed his confidence that John Dramani Mahama would emerge victorious in the upcoming presidential election and lead the country once more.
In his words, as a former president, he believes that the NDC flagbearer is well-positioned to make positive changes if given the chance.
“It is early yet to decide on 2024 but in my rational self, Ghana has tried a whole lot of things. We have tried military coup, democracies, parliamentary type, presidential type and I think the only thing we haven’t tried is somebody who has been President before. So, I think it’s John Mahama he has been in position before, and therefore when he comes back. He knows the path to tread. He knows who to trust and people not to trust. I think John Mahama will win 2024,” he had said.
Furthermore, Tru News Report quoted Mr. Amoabeng as saying Ghanaian voters made a serious error by electing President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party to power in a publication shared on November 3, 2023.
He claimed that Ghanaians are to blame for the country’s current economic woes because they elected President Akufo-Addo’s administration during an interview with Berla Mundi on TV3.
According to him, the people of Ghana are responsible for the actions of the NPP government, whether they are good or bad because they voted for the NPP to represent them in running the affairs of the state.
He remembered how the current government shut down the UT Bank and others as part of what it called a “cleanup” of the banking sector.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s made a statement on Thursday, March 24, 2022, that the government has allocated a total of more than 25 billion since 2018 for the purpose of addressing issues within the financial sector.
“Restructuring the banking sector to protect the savings of 4.6 million depositors and strengthening the financial sector. So far, the government has spent over 25 billion since 2018 to clean up the financial sector,” Ken Ofori-Atta said.
