The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey urged Ghanaians not to sell their conscience and integrity for peanuts, warning that it will have dirr consequences on the country.
At a gathering in Assin-Bereku to express gratitude to the people, Mr. Kwetey stated that the practice of buying and selling votes was evidence of poor leadership, a source of corruption, and a weakness in Ghana’s democratic credentials.
He said that the people of Assin North’s opinion shouldn’t be ignored, but rather seen as a call to duty for the nation, one that should be carried out with honesty and professionalism.
In particular, he cautioned political parties to take into account the fact that “the people cannot be taken with fiction of development and bribes for votes... That is the message Ghanaians from far and near must imbibe. If they come to you to buy your conscience, tell them I will not sell my conscience and integrity for the country to suffer.”
Mr. Kwetey urged the Electoral Commission, the Supreme Court, and the media to follow the clear mandate they have been given by the people of Assin North.
The Assin North MP, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson, has thanked the people of his constituency for electing him.
“I am deeply humbled by the confidence the people have expressed in what I stand for and what I have done. I am also fully aware of the reciprocal responsibilities that this massive show of confidence imposes on me. My solemn pledge is to work as hard as I can for the people who have made this possible,” Mr. Quayson said.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam and leader of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, said that his caucus will stand in support of Mr. Quayson during his trial on forgery and perjury charges.
He let the Minority know they should expect full support from them once the accused member appeared in court.
Mr. Quayson received 17,245 of the valid votes cast, or 57.56 percent of the total, while the NPP candidate, Mr. Charles Opoku, received 12,630 votes, or 42.15 percent.
