The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have been a platform for some of the most unforgettable moments in music history since their inception in 1984.
Megan Thee Stallion will host and perform at this year’s ceremony marking it her first time leading an award show. The event is set to air live on September 11, 2024, at 8 p.m. Eastern from the UBS Arena on Long Island, New York.
Here are some of the most memorable highlights from past ceremonies:
Madonna’s Wardrobe Malfunction (1984)
At the inaugural VMAs, Madonna performed “Like a Virgin” and experienced a wardrobe malfunction when her shoe fell off. In her attempt to retrieve it, her dress flipped up, exposing her bare bottom, a moment that became iconic in pop culture.
The 63-year-old singer talked about the incident when she appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” Wednesday, noting that it made the song “Like a Virgin,” which she was performing when the mishap took place, controversial.
“It turned out that the controversial thing wasn’t the song itself, it was my performance at the MTV Awards,” she said. “I was trying to do this smooth move, like, dive for the shoe and make it look like choreography and my dress flipped up and my butt was showing.”
Diana Ross and Lil Kim (1999)
During the presentation of the Best Hip-Hop Video award, Diana Ross playfully touched Lil Kim’s exposed breast, which was covered only by a purple pastie. This moment sparked conversations about sexuality and empowerment in the music industry.
Rage Against the Machine’s Protest (2000)
Bassist Tim Commerford climbed the set in protest after the band lost the Best Rock Video award to Limp Bizkit. His act of defiance resulted in his arrest and highlighted the intense competition and emotions surrounding the awards.
Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera Kiss (2003)

In a shocking performance, Madonna kissed both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during their rendition of “Hollywood.” This moment became a defining image of the VMAs and sparked endless media discussion.
Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift (2009)

Perhaps one of the most infamous moments in VMA history, Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video, declaring that Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. This incident not only created a viral sensation but also led to a long-standing feud between the two artists.
Lady Gaga’s Blood Costume (2009)

During her performance of “Paparazzi,” Lady Gaga shocked the audience by appearing to ooze blood from her midsection. This dramatic visual was both disturbing and captivating, solidifying her status as a pop provocateur.
Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress (2010)

In another bold statement, Lady Gaga wore a dress made entirely of raw meat when she accepted her award for Best Video of the Year. This outfit sparked debates about fashion, animal rights, and the boundaries of artistic expression.
Beyoncé Reveals Pregnancy (2011)
While performing “Love on Top,” Beyoncé revealed her pregnancy by rubbing her baby bump, creating a viral moment that resonated with fans and media alike. This announcement became one of the most talked-about moments of the night.
These moments reflect the VMAs’ ability to blend music, fashion, and cultural commentary, making it a staple in the entertainment industry and a significant event in pop culture history.
