ECOWAS Reacts To Disturbances In Sierra Leone

The ongoing unrest in Sierra Leone, a member of the political bloc, has been strongly condemned by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

ECOWAS in a statement dated Sunday, November 26, 2023, said it “has learnt with utter disgust a plot by certain individuals to acquire arms and disturb the peace and constitutional order in Sierra Leone. ECOWAS condemns this act and calls for the arrest and prosecution of all participants in this illegal act.”

The West African bloc reiterated its zero tolerance for unconstitutional change of government.

“ECOWAS further underscores its commitment to supporting the government and people of Sierra Leone to deepen democracy and good governance, consolidate peace and security as well as foster socio-economic development,” the statement said.

The government of Sierra Leone reportedly imposed a countrywide curfew on Sunday, November 26, following an unsuccessful attempt by unknown individuals to infiltrate a significant military armoury and barracks in the West African nation.

President Julius Maada Bio confirmed the breach of security at the Wilberforce military barracks in the capital, Freetown, where the assailants targeted the military armoury.

“However, they were repelled,” Mr. Bio said on social media, “and calm has been restored.”

Mr. Bio called on the public to stay indoors, adding: “We shall continue to protect the peace and security of Sierra Leone against the forces that wish to truncate our much-cherished stability.”

The placement of the barracks near Mr. Bio’s residence is a strategic decision, and the armory holds significant importance as it houses various weapons. Local journalists have reported the occurrence of intense gunfire in Freetown on Sunday morning, with soldiers equipped with rocket-propelled grenades and rifles establishing military blockades in key areas of the city.
