In a recent audit, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was able to collect GH18.5 million from three government agencies.

On Monday, March 20, 2023, the ECG launched its nationwide exercise to disconnect homes and companies that have failed to pay debts for power supplies they owned. Parliament, the Ghana Airport Company Limited, and the state broadcaster, the Ghana Broadcasting Company (GBC), own a total of GH46.9 million.

According to JoyNews, the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) has paid GHc10 million out of the GHc28 million it owes ECG in order to avoid having its electricity cut off.

Parliament owns a total of GH13 million, and after the ECG rejected an initial offer of 1 million cedis, the house has agreed to pay GH8.5 million to prevent disconnection. Laila Abubakari, who is in charge of external communications for the ECG, said, “GHȼ5 million of the GHȼ8.5 million they promised will be paid by the Finance Ministry through the GIFMIS platform. They have written us a check for the rest GHȼ3.5 million but we asked them to process it electronically because we are not accepting cheques or cash in this exercise.”

According to the Ghana Broadcasting Company, the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Energy had already agreed to pay the amount this year, after paying off about GH17 million of the debt last year. Due to the promises made by these state-owned institutions, there has been no break in service on this day.

Today, March 21, 2023, the team will start the second day of the exercise by going to other state-owned institutions. They will do this over the next 30 days, and hopefully, the total of GH5.7 billion will be recovered at the end of this exercise.
