Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Managing Director Samuel Dubik Mahama announced a reward programme to encourage locals to report instances of illegal electricity connections.

At a press conference on Thursday, May 4th, Mr. Mahama announced that citizens would be compensated 6% of the total debt of any illegal connections they uncovered.

“Citizens who report illegal connections will get 6% of the amount,” Mr. Mahama said, adding that “let’s all use this as a means to help ECG. ECG is not for one person; it is for all of us.” Mr. Mahama stated.

Mr. Mahama added that in recent weeks, ECG has recovered about GH3.1 billion from nonpaying clients.

Over the course of a month, the company ran a revenue mobilisation campaign with the goal of collecting GH5.7 billion from customers who had failed to pay for electricity they had consumed.

The exercise resulted in both public and private entities paying down some of their debt in order to avoid being disconnected.

Some establishments were allowed to remain connected to the national grid after promising to pay off their debts.
