ECG Cuts Power Supply To Accra Sports Stadium, Accra Academy Over Excess Debts Of GH₵800k

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has taken decisive action by disconnecting power supply to both the Accra Sports Stadium and Accra Academy due to accumulated debts totaling over GH₵800,000.

At the Accra Sports Stadium, the disconnection occurred on Monday evening, leaving the facility in darkness over a debt of GH₵400,000 owed to the country’s power distributor.

The timing of the disconnection raised concerns as workers were striving to prepare the stadium for Friday’s Paris 2024 Olympic football qualifier match between Zambia’s women’s national team and Ghana’s Black Queens.

This is not the first instance of the ECG disconnecting power to the stadium over unpaid bills. In March 2022, the National Task Force of ECG undertook a similar action over a debt amounting to GH₵508,000.00.

Similarly, Accra Academy found itself without power on Monday night as ECG disconnected the school due to arrears totaling approximately GH₵480,000 in post-paid electricity bills since July 2023.

Laila Abubakari, ECG’s External Communications Manager, justified the decision to disconnect the school, stating that the action was necessary to protect the company’s revenue mobilization efforts.

She emphasized that the school will only be reconnected upon meeting certain requirements, including settling at least 50% of the outstanding bills.

Meanwhile, concerns were raised over the disconnection affecting both pre-paid and post-paid users at Accra Academy. Mrs. Abubakari assured that the anomaly would be investigated thoroughly.
