The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, under the leadership of Jean Mensa, has shared a breakdown of activities surrounding this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to a report from Graphic Online, the EC will begin by receiving nominations of candidates for the elections from September 9 to 13.
This marks the start of the political season’s countdown to the climax. Following the nomination period, the EC will conduct the balloting for positions on the presidential ballot paper on September 23, 2024, and the parliamentary balloting on September 24, 2024
If all goes according to plan, the EC expects to declare the results of the 2024 presidential polls within three days of the voting exercise. In preparation for the general election, the EC has outlined its programme of activities.
This includes a voters’ registration exercise from May 7 to May 27, 2024, as well as a nationwide effort to replace missing voter ID cards starting from May 30, 2024.Prior to the registration exercise, there will be 56 days of public education on the process, running from April 1 to May 26, 2024.
According to the schedule obtained exclusively by the Daily Graphic, the EC plans to submit the provisional voters’ register to the political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024. Additionally, there will be an exhibition of the voters’ register from July 15 to 24, 2024.
The political parties are anticipated to receive the conclusive voters’ register from August 30 to September 5, 2024, as per the sources.
It was mentioned that while there is no legal obligation for the Electoral Commission (EC) to announce the results within a specific timeframe, the EC aims to ensure that the presidential results are declared within a maximum of three days. The sources also highlighted that the Regional Collation Centres will continue to play a role in announcing the results at the regional level.
