According to multiple reports, an accident involving a vehicle from President Akufo-Addo’s convoy has occurred at Bunso Junction in the Eastern Region.

The collision took place when a KIA Rhino truck crossed the path of the vehicle, resulting in a crash. Tragically, the driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser lost their life at the scene, while three other occupants sustained various injuries.

It is important to note that President Akufo-Addo was not present in the convoy during the accident, as he had attended the funeral of former Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, in Kumasi over the weekend.

Disturbing videos circulating on social media depict the severely damaged Toyota on the roadside, with security personnel also present at the scene.

A statement from Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications of the office of the President detailed in a press statement how the accident occurred;

“On Sunday, 19th May 2024, several vehicles belonging to the President’s convoy were involved in a fatal accident along the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The unfortunate incident occurred whilst the convoy was on its way back from Kumasi, after accompanying the President to Kumasi for a series of events this weekend.

Tragically, one of the drivers, Mr. Kwesi Atta, has lost his life. Additionally, several close protection and police officers from the President’s security detail have sustained varying degrees of injuries, and received initial treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital.

The injured persons are currently being evacuated to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further treatment and observation.

Several vehicles in the convoy have also been completely wrecked as a result of the accident. Fortunately, the President is safe and unharmed, as he travelled to Accra via military aircraft.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured officers.

Further details will be communicated as we continue to assess the situation. We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time.

Euphin Eugene Arhin

Director of Communications Office of the President”
