Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is showing off a whole new look after losing weight for his upcoming film The Smashing Machine.
The 53-year-old actor and former WWE star plays MMA legend Mark Kerr, a two-time UFC heavyweight champion whose story is filled with both glory and struggle. To step into the role, Johnson slimmed down considerably — a transformation he proudly debuted at the Venice Film Festival on September 1.
“This transformation was something I was really hungry to do,” Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve been fortunate to have the career I’ve had, but there was this little voice inside me asking, ‘What if I could do more?’ This role gave me that chance.”

Johnson’s leaner frame was first noticed when he appeared at the festival in a blue silk shirt and black trousers, turning heads with his new look. Fans quickly flooded social media with reactions, calling him “unrecognizable” and praising his dedication. Some even suggested his performance could be Oscar-worthy.
Actors like Joaquin Phoenix, Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey, and Jared Leto have also famously shed pounds for demanding roles, but for Johnson, this marks his first major dramatic turn. The film doesn’t just follow Kerr’s rise in the 1990s MMA world, but also explores his battles with painkiller addiction and his turbulent personal life.
“Mark was the greatest fighter in the world at one point,” Johnson said, holding back emotion. “But this film isn’t really about fighting. It’s a love story — about Mark and his wife, Dawn, and about his love for the sport, even through the struggles. Mark overdosed twice and is lucky to be alive. That’s part of what makes this story so powerful.”
With Emily Blunt starring alongside him as Dawn Staples, The Smashing Machine is already shaping up to be one of Johnson’s most transformative performances — both physically and emotionally.
