According to a spokesperson for the couple’s Archewell Foundation, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, have been asked to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage, which was given to them by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The couple has resided in the 17th-century country house, which is located on the grounds of Windsor Castle in Berkshire, since announcing their intention to step down from their positions as senior British royals earlier this year.
The Crown Estate owns the cottage, which the couple was permitted to use without paying rent. They spent allegedly £2.4 million on extensive renovations to the house before moving out. The funds used to pay for the renovations, according to Buckingham Palace, would be reimbursed. The Windsor home has now been offered to Prince Andrew by King Charles III.
King Charles reportedly approved the action, which is likely to be seen negatively weeks after Harry’s autobiography, “Spare,” was published.
The Sussexes made the decision to step down from their positions as senior royals in January 2020, but they added that they would “continue to fully support” the queen, who passed away last year.
Harry and Meghan were raising their two children in California after resigning from their full-time royal duties. They had decided to keep Frogmore Cottage as their base in the UK even though they were moving across the pond in 2020. They agreed to let Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank move in with their infant son, August, in November 2020.
