The Vice President of Ghana and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has shared a new update about The National Cathedral.

Dr Bawumia emphasizes that the government cannot allow it to deteriorate and calls for the involvement of all stakeholders to ensure its successful completion.

He highlights the significance of this structure for the country and urges the Church to work together with the government in securing funds for the project’s completion. He said this during an interview on Accra-based Citi FM.

“The question on the National Cathedral is a very important one. The National Cathedral I have contributed to its construction personally. I believe it’s a very important thing for Ghana. But I think that as it stands now the Church has to come together with the government and let us sit done and talk about the way forward.

“The Church should sit down with the government and tell us how we can get private resources to complete the Cathedral. But I think it is possible, we should not say it is impossible.

“Let us all sit back together and figure out the way forward on how to complete this Cathedral. I think if we all come together we will figure it out. So I want all of us to come together and sit down and see the best way forward to generate the resources to complete because we can’t leave it where it is.

The cathedral was established as a commemorative initiative for the country’s 60th independence anniversary, aiming to fill a gap in the nation’s architectural landscape by offering a designated venue for official religious ceremonies.

Additionally, it is envisioned to offer a shared space for worship across different denominations, fostering unity within the Christian community and honouring the principle of religious freedom in the nation.

Meanwhile, Dr. Paul Opoku Mensah, the Executive Director of the National Cathedral Secretariat, has disclosed that the National Cathedral project has incurred a total of GH₵339.003.064.86 under the administration of President Akufo-Addo.

This amount encompasses GH₵113 million disbursed to the Consultant, Sir David Adjaye, and GH₵225 million directly allocated to the Secretariat for the project’s construction.
