In a display of traditional authority, the Chief of Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region revealed that he had to expel Nana Kwame Bediako, leader of the New Force, from his land for organizing a political campaign without following customary protocols.
According to the Chief, Nana Kwame Bediako had held a campaign durbar in Drobonso but failed to seek permission from the palace before the event, which is considered a serious breach of traditional etiquette in the region.

In many parts of Ghana, particularly in communities governed by chieftaincy, political figures are expected to pay courtesy visits to the local chiefs to inform them of their presence and seek their blessing before holding events or rallies.
The Chief of Drobonso expressed his disappointment in Bediako’s disregard for this essential cultural practice. He noted that it is customary and respectful to engage with traditional authorities before undertaking any significant activity on their land.
“As a leader, it’s important to respect the customs of the people. You don’t just come into my community and start organizing events without informing me, the chief. That is not how things are done here,” the Chief stated.
This incident highlights the ongoing intersection between politics and tradition in Ghana. Although Ghana is a modern democratic state, traditional authorities still wield significant influence at the local level.
Political figures often find themselves navigating these dual structures, where the influence of chiefs remains pivotal in securing local support. In regions like the Ashanti Region, home to the powerful Asantehene and several other influential chiefs, political leaders who fail to recognize the role of these authorities often face backlash from the local population.

The Chief emphasized that seeking the blessing and approval of traditional leaders is not just symbolic but crucial to maintaining harmony between politics and culture.
