According to two sources familiar with the investigation, federal investigators are making preparations to present the accusers of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs before a federal grand jury.
This development suggests that the U.S. Justice Department is progressing towards potentially seeking an indictment against Combs.
One source has revealed that investigators have informed potential witnesses that they may be called upon to testify in front of a federal grand jury in New York City.
If individuals who have filed civil lawsuits against Combs are indeed brought before the grand jury, it would signify a significant escalation in the government’s ongoing investigation into the producer and founder of Bad Boy Records.
Since November, Combs has been named in a total of eight civil lawsuits, with seven directly accusing him of sexual assault. One of these lawsuits, filed by his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura, has already been resolved through a settlement.
Additionally, another lawsuit has accused his son Christian Combs of sexual assault, while Sean Combs himself is accused of aiding and abetting.
While a spokesperson for the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations agency (HSI) declined to comment on the existence of a grand jury, they did confirm that the investigation is still ongoing.
Two sources have informed CNN that the potential witnesses in the federal probe into Combs have not yet been prepared for testimony.
The HSI investigators are currently in the process of gathering evidence and questioning potential sources of information. One of the sources mentioned that the investigators are meticulous and taking their time to ensure that any potential indictment is foolproof.
Grand juries, which consist of ordinary citizens, play a crucial role in the prosecution process. They not only investigate and approve the subpoenaing of documents and witnesses but also have the authority to vote on whether to charge suspects criminally.
The involvement of a grand jury indicates that a case has progressed beyond the preliminary stage, where investigators typically assess whether there have been any possible violations of the law.
