Death Toll In Renewed Bawku Conflict Now 18; Dozens Flee To Safety

Troubled residents of Bawku in the Upper East Region are fleeing the town as renewed chieftaincy clashes have left 18 dead.

Property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis have also been destroyed in a spate of two weeks.

The Municipal Security Council has called for reinforcement to assist security personnel as unknown gunmen continue to attack the township.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku, Hamza Amadu, told Citi FM that MUSEC will work to protect lives and properties.

“18 people have died so far. People are living in fear following the killings.”

“We’re aware of people fleeing, but we want to assure residents that we are not sleeping on the job.”

“We are doing all we can to protect lives and property.”

Meanwhile, the National Peace Council has urged the two feuding factions to commit to restoring longstanding peace in the area.

It particularly called out the Kusasis to rescind their decision to withdraw from the Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee amidst the ongoing conflict between Mamprusis and Kusasis in the area.

The Kusasis withdrew from the committee because all efforts to get a solution to the conflict in Bawku have failed.

The committee was tasked to open up constructive and open dialogue among all people of Bawku.
