Couples Who ‘Fight’ Live Together Longer – Study Reveals

An argument with your partner may be good for you and your relationship. This is according to a research published in the Journal of Biobehavioral Medicine. Per the findings of the researchers, partners who share similar conflict resolution strategies have a lower risk of dying early.

The purpose of this study, which tracked 192 married couples for more than 32 years, was to identify the factors influencing each partner’s risk of dying. Questions about how each couple handles arguments were asked of all couples. What’s their preferred method of expressing themselves: keeping feelings bottled up, withdrawing from others, going overboard, or being completely straightforward about anything that’s on their mind?

The study’s authors found that partners who resolve conflict in a similar way are more likely to enjoy a long and happy marriage than those who do not. If one person in a relationship likes to express anger and the other person does the same, the two of them have a better chance of living a long and happy life together.

In addition, the researchers believed that expressing one’s feelings during disagreement was better than ignoring them. You know that keeping your mouth shut about problems never leads to a resolution.

People who are more open with their partners about their emotions and viewpoints are more likely to resolve disagreements peacefully and reach conclusions that satisfy both parties. The health of both partners benefits from a deeper understanding of one another through letting go of emotions.

When you and your partner next get into an argument, observe how you react to each other. If you’re still unhappy or find that you’ve developed additional ways to cope after the fight has ended, this is a good moment to talk about it with your partner.
