Cookie Tee, the TV personality and Co-host of TV3’s New Day, has issued an apology to the Ewe community after a joke made during the previous edition of Today’s Woman show went wrong.
During the latest New Day show, Cookie Tee, who had previously mentioned she is Ewe during a conversation with Celestine Donkor, apologized once again for any offence caused by her remarks.
The controversy arose when gospel singer Celestine Donkor shared that she had prayed for a husband without a ‘heavy’ Ewe surname, which is common in her culture.
In response to this, Cookie Tee, whose maternal side is Ewe, agreed with Celestine’s sentiment, expressing her preference not to marry a man with a difficult-to-pronounce Ewe name.
After the video circulated online, some viewers took offense to the discussion’s ethnocentric implications, resulting in backlash from the Ewe community.
Following Celestine’s apology posted on Facebook, Cookie Tee also expressed regret for any unintended harm caused by her comments.
“It was supposed to be an ice breaker to a conversation, it wasn’t supposed to be the way it was taken at all. This morning, sincerely from my heart, I just want to apologise to all of you, it was a joke that went bad.
“I’m rendering my apology to the ewe community and Ghanaians. It was a joke and not meant to denigrate the ewe community,” Coco Tee while with Roland Walker and Naa Ashorkor on the New Day show.
