Gospel musician Celestine Donkor has apologised for unintentionally offending the Ewe community during her recent interview with Coco Tee on TV3’s Today’s Woman show.
In the interview, Donkor, who is of Ewe descent, shared that her birth name is Celestine Akakpo Dosu and she only took on the surname Donkor after marrying her husband.
She playfully mentioned that she was glad to have shed her Ewe surname as she found Ewe names to be quite weighty on the tongue.
Donkor also expressed her desire for her children not to carry the burden of a heavy Ewe name. During the conversation, Coco Tee, who is also Ewe, joined in the lighthearted banter, agreeing that Ewe names can be challenging.
However, following the circulation of the video online, some individuals took offence to the ethnocentric undertones of the discussion, leading to a backlash from the Ewe community.
Celestine has recently uploaded a new video where she sincerely apologizes for the mistake. She clarified that she intended to make a joke and never anticipated that it would be misunderstood.
In her apology, she specifically addressed the Ewe community, reaffirming her pride in being Ewe and her commitment to representing them, despite this incident’s negative impact on her reputation.
Sharing the video on her Facebook page, Celestine Donkor wrote;

Kindly accept my sincerest apology in this short video. I was wrong. I am sorry. I will strive to do my best as a proud Ewe woman, a proud Ghanaian, and a committed vessel for God’s use. May Almighty GOD, MAWU YEHOWA, bless and keep us all. AKPE
