The construction of a flyover over the Accra-Tema Motorway would require the closure of many major roads in Accra beginning on Tuesday, June 13, and continuing until Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has issued a warning to “the general public and all road users” that “due to intense construction activities at the southern approach of the Flyover over the Motorway project, the Flowerpot Roundabout bound traffic will experience some disruptions to traffic flow” during the aforementioned time frame.
In a statement, the ministry detailed the routes that will be impacted, which included Spintex Road (East and West Bound), Burma Camp Road from Giffard Road, and Martey Tsuru Road (East and West Bound). To ensure smooth traffic flow through the area, the ministry suggested drivers either abide by traffic control and diversion signs set up at important places or use alternative routes.
The flyover, considered to be one of the biggest in the sub-region, is estimated to cost about $200 million and is expected to be complete by the end of 2023. The Ghanaian government’s Afriexim Bank is funding the project, while Messrs. China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited is leading the construction work.
There will be one mainline bridge (802m), two ramp bridges (220m), four auxiliary roads (2.5km), and auxiliary construction works. Drains, culverts, streetlights, road line markings, and an additional exit into Cantonments from the Giffard Road Interchange are just some of the items that will be installed as part of this project. The work will also involve replacing the existing single-lane bridge with a dual-carriageway bridge made of asphaltic concrete.
