Clement Apaak Lashes Out At Nana Addo Over GETFund Capping

Dr. Clement Apaak, the deputy ranking member of parliament’s education committee, has criticized the Nana Addo government for not fulfilling its commitment to repay students who have asked for loans.

The politician, who represents Builsa South, was responding to a statement from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) requesting prompt repayment of student debts.

According to the statement released by NUGS, the organization has received several complaints from students around the country about the delay or complete lack of payment of their loan applications.

It has also come out that the arrears from last semester were not paid, which affects about 70,000 students who applied. The report also says that some schools have sent notices and warnings to students who are affected by the problem.

Dr. Clement Apaak said that the government is unable to fulfill its commitment since it has foolishly reduced and capped the amount of money that should be granted to GETFund. According to him, the Students Loan Trust Fund has been negatively affected by the capping because GETFund is the principal source of funding for the fund.

“Student Loan Trust is unable to meet its obligations because of the reckless decision by the Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Bawumia NPP gov’t to cap/cut funds that should go to GETFUND. GETFUND is the main source of funds for the Loan Trust, but GETFUND itself is struggling. This is the root of the problem!” he said.
