Eight students of the Chiana Senior High School in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region who were dismissed for allegedly insulting President Akufo-Addo are now free to return to school.

This comes after managers of the school implemented the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) directive to reconsider the punishment handed to the remorseful female students.

According to Citi News, a parent of one of the girls confirmed via telephone conversation that he had been called by school authorities to bring back his daughter to continue her studies.

The GES directive followed an intervention by President Akufo-Addo through the Ministry of Education.

The education directorate in the area has thus recalled the students start the new term with their mates.

The students were captured in a video that went viral in 2022 insulting the president for the poor implementation of the Free Senior High School policy.

After a probe into their conduct, they were outrightly dismissed in January 2023 while serving a suspension since November 15, 2022.

But some critics including the minority in parliament said the punishment was harsh and a threat to their future. They particularly called on the president to pardon the students which he did.

The students also apologized to the President in a new social media video, saying they were influenced by social media trends to create the video.
