Conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday during an appearance at Utah Valley University. He was 31.
Authorities confirmed that Kirk was struck by a single gunshot while addressing students as part of his organization’s “American Comeback Tour.” Video from the event shows him speaking at an outdoor “Prove Me Wrong” debate when the gunfire erupted, sending the crowd into shock.

Police said the shooter fled the scene and has not yet been identified. A manhunt is ongoing across the state. Two individuals who were initially detained were later released after officials determined they had no connection to the incident.
Tributes poured in shortly after the news broke. Former President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social:
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
Elected officials from both political parties condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence.
Later that evening, hundreds gathered at the Utah State Capitol for a candlelight vigil organized by members of the Utah House of Representatives. Republican Rep. Karianne Lisonbee told mourners, “This was Republicans, Democrats, and everybody coming together, denouncing this senseless violence that took Charlie’s life.”
Kirk was remembered as a passionate and influential figure in American politics—an outspoken voice who sought to engage with young people and challenge them to think critically, whether they agreed with him or not.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to remain calm and assist with any information that could help track down the shooter.
