Charles Foster, the beloved former Coronation Street and Emmerdale actor and ITV announcer is dead.
Foster was a regular character on Coronation Street and Emmerdale from 1971 to 1988, with his role as the eccentric landlord of the Rovers Return pub in Coronation Street particularly memorable. In 1988 he left the shows to take up a post as the announcer for ITV, a role he held until his death.
Foster’s unmistakable delivery, charming humor, and mischievous twinkle in his eye made him an instantly recognizable figure for ITV viewers. He was always a popular figure in the cast of Coronation Street and Emmerdale, and his fan-base only grew when he became the face of ITV.
As the network’s longest-serving announcer, Foster was part of the fabric of ITV for decades, introducing viewers to some of their biggest and most loved shows. He was also a gifted voice actor, lending his voice to many TV shows and commercials.
Foster was also a noted philanthropist, giving generously to charities and good causes. He will be remembered by many as an extremely kind and generous man who was passionate about his work and the people he worked with.
Foster’s family released a statement today expressing their sorrow at his passing, and thanking fans and colleagues for their kind words and memories.
“Charles was an unforgettable character whose wit, charm, and enthusiasm will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a true gentleman who lived life to the fullest and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.”
BBC presenter Steve Saul wrote: “Sorry to hear the reports of the death of former Granada TV continuity announcer and voiceover Charles Foster. Along with Colin Weston and Jim Pope they were the friendly face of ITV when I was growing up.
Foster is survived by his wife, actress Meg Johnson, who appeared in Coronation Street, Brookside and Taggart; two sons, and three grandchildren.
