Former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, has responded to media allegations that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) discovered $5 million and GHC48 million in her bank accounts.
According to JoyNews, documents it acquired revealed the sums of money the OSP had frozen from the former minister’s Prudential Bank and Société Générale Ghana accounts. It was reported that Cecelia Dapaah’s Prudential Bank accounts contained US$5 million and GH&48 million, while her Société Générale account contained GH1 million in investments and GH700,00 in cash.
Cecilia Dapaah said in a statement released by her attorneys that the accounts information alleged to be in her Prudential Bank account was merely a fabrication. In an application it submitted to the High Court to confirm the freezing of the former minister’s assets, as reported by the media house, the OSP reportedly never disclosed the amounts discovered in the accounts in question.
“On 8 August 2023, the Office of the Special Prosecutor… filed an application in the High Court, Financial Division to confirm among others a freezing order regarding our client’s bank accounts. Although, the Application did not disclose any specific amounts of money found in the bank accounts, your news outlet, JoyNews published false information about the amounts in those accounts
while ascribing the information to nameless, unidentified and unverifiable sources.
“Not only had the OSP not disclosed any amounts found in our client’s accounts, but the assertion that our client’s accounts contain $5m and GH¢48m is false,” parts of the statement read.
The statement underlines that the OSP has not provided any information regarding the specific sums discovered in our client’s accounts. Additionally, it disputes the claim that our client’s accounts hold $5 million and GH¢48 million, asserting that this assertion is untrue.
Additionally, the attorneys said that even when the OSP claimed it had not disclosed the amounts of money in their clients’ accounts, the media outlet continued to publish false reports.
If the media outlet does not retract the disputed publications within three days, the lawyers have threatened to file a lawsuit against it.
