Burna Boy could not resist aiming a dig at South Africans following the crowning of Mia Le Roux, a white South African, as the new Miss South Africa.
This incident follows the withdrawal of Chidimma Adetshina, a South African model of Nigerian heritage, from the Miss South Africa 2024 competition, as she expressed fears of possible xenophobic backlash against herself and her family.
In a statement posted on Instagram on Thursday afternoon, Adetshina, 23, cited safety concerns as the primary reason for her withdrawal. “I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the competition,” she wrote. “The journey has been amazing, but for the safety and wellbeing of my family and me, I must step back.”
Mia Le Roux received her title during a ceremony at the Sun Bet Arena in Time Square, Menlyn, Pretoria.
Notably, Mia Le Roux is the first Miss South Africa winner who is deaf and has a cochlear implant. She will also be the first contestant with such a disability to participate in the Miss Universe 2024 competition in Mexico.
As part of her rewards, she will receive the Mowana crown, a fully furnished luxury apartment, a Mercedes Benz, R1 million, and additional prizes.
Reacting to the development, Burna Boy wrote “So after all that”, adding laughter emojis.
