Adele is facing a legal storm over accusations of plagiarism. The British singer’s hit song “Million Years Ago” from her 25 albums could be yanked from streaming services worldwide after a Brazilian judge ruled in favour of local musician Toninho Geraes.
Geraes, who composed the 1995 samba track “Mulheres (Women),” claims Adele’s song is strikingly similar to his.
The judge’s ruling, which applies to Adele’s global distribution, orders Sony and Universal to cease any use or distribution of the track—whether physical, digital, or via streaming.
Geraes is seeking $160,000 in moral damages and a songwriting credit for his alleged contribution to Adele’s track.

He also wants the labels to pay an $8,000 fine for every violation of the ruling.
While the labels have the option to appeal, it’s still unclear whether this ruling will have international implications, especially for global streaming platforms.
Geraes’ lawyer, Fredimio Trotta, hailed the judge’s decision as a landmark victory for Brazilian music, alleging that Brazilian artists’ works have been too often copied in the international music scene.
Trotta’s team is now set to alert streaming services, broadcasters, and radio stations about the ruling.
