Billionaire Jeff Bezos Names His New $500million Superyacht A Māori Word With A Unique Significance

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has given his $500 million superyacht the Maori word “Koru,” which means “new beginnings.”

This week, Bezos’ contentious 127-meter Oceanco Y721 yacht began communicating its new moniker via the vessel’s autonomous identification system (AIS).

When delivered to the Amazon founder, it will be the highest sailing boat in the world, surpassing the current biggest ocean-going passenger ship, Sea Cloud.

The millionaire commissioned the building of the superyacht, which made headlines last year when it needed the demolition of a famous Dutch bridge in order to enter open water.

Bezos stated that he would pay the Dutch city of Rotterdam to demolish and then reconstruct a portion of the 95-year-old historic bridge so that the ship could pass through.

However, following a public uproar, the masts on the ship’s sails were redesigned to circumvent a portion of the Koningshaven Bridge, allowing the ship to pass through without the bridge being demolished.

In August, the ship, which is nearly twice as long as an Airbus A380, first entered the sea.

The yacht’s triple masts reach an astounding 70 meters in height, making it even taller than the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The boat of the Amazon founder will have three gigantic masts and three decks.

The design of the Koru was inspired by another of Bezos’ vessels, the Black Pearl.

Built in 2018, the Black Pearl is the biggest DynaRig sailing boat in the world, with three 70-meter-tall carbon masts.

It will thereafter complete sea testing before being handed to the billionaire.

The boat is anticipated to be completed and delivered in February, at which point it will join a fleet of three sailing yachts longer than 100 meters.

It is rumored that maintaining the yacht will cost Bezos $25 million each year.
