Human rights lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu has confirmed the deportation of his client, Shalimar Abbiusi from the shores of Ghana by the Ghana Immigration Service.

Confirming the incident in an interview with Citi News, Mr. Sosu described the action of the Ghanaian law enforcement agency as a violation of his client’s fundamental human rights.

“I picked information that sometime last night, she was being escorted to board the Brussels Airline to Belgium. But clearly, this is so shameful and disgraceful.

“Because she was not deported from Ghana and there was no deportation order by the Minister but an Executive Instrument. So holding her and even denying her access to her lawyers and even her Family and escorting her with men in uniform was a violation. When you revoked the person’s visa and said that leave our jurisdiction within 24 hours, she could move from Ghana to Togo. She has the Liberty to move anywhere else that she can go.”

Abbiusi, a Belgian national who gained popularity as a spokesperson for the New Force political movement, was arrested and put before a court by the Ghana Immigration Service on charges of using a false declaration to obtain a resident permit.

However, the state dropped the charges against her on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, after which she was subsequently rearrested and deported from the country.

Until her announcement as spokesperson of the New Force, the movement operated on anonymity, with billboards announcing its emergence into the Ghanaian political scene spread across the country and social media.

The movement, which has political watchers on edge, has yet to reveal the identity of the individuals behind their activities.
