Amid the intensifying political climate leading up to the 2024 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has once again reaffirmed his position on same-sex marriages.
Emphasizing his unwavering stance, he expressed his disapproval of same-sex marriage and made it clear that LGBTQ+ individuals will not be tolerated under his leadership.
Dr Bawumia conveyed this message during a meeting with the Clergy in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region.
He said despite the anticipated challenges and pressures that may arise, he remains resolute in safeguarding the cultural values and beliefs of the Ghanaian people.
“I want to state again without any equivocation that we will not allow it in Ghana. It is not going to be allowed. Our Bible says no, our Quaran says no and our people say no. So no, that is the answer. No man will marry a man, no woman will marry a woman. It is not our value and I will stand firm no matter the consequences.
We will safeguard our country and we will safeguard our people and that matter I want to be clear and firm that this is how I view it and that will not happen,” he reaffirmed.
Back in April this year, during this year’s Eid al-Fitr celebration, Bawumia made it clear that he opposes the activities of the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana.
Addressing a large crowd of Muslims in Kumasi during Eid prayers, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his stance against homosexuality in Ghana, citing his adherence to the teachings of Islam and Christianity.
Furthermore, Dr Bawumia highlighted the alignment of Ghana’s cultural values and various religious beliefs, particularly Christianity, in opposition to such practices.
“First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality,” Dr. Bawumia said.
