The one-month ban on drumming and noisemaking in Accra ended in a celebratory ceremony conducted at the Gbese Palace on Thursday, June 15, 2023, in order to get ready for the Ga people’s much-anticipated Homowo celebration.

The ban was lifted with celebrations and the shooting of muskets as the Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, played the Odadao twin drums.

Attendees of the traditional included the Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Wulomei, and the people of Accra, as well as traditional leaders from the various Ga communities.

The AMA announced that the prohibition would begin on May 15th and end on Thursday, June 15. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the organization’s head of public affairs, made the announcement in a press release.

Placing loudspeakers outside of public buildings like churches, mosques, and bars was prohibited. Those who preach by the side of the road were ordered to stop. This prohibition included funerals and any related ceremonies. The statement also called on religious and traditional leaders to treat one another with dignity and warn their followers against making offensive comments about the other’s religion or way of life.

Now that this barrier has been removed, the Homowo festival can proceed with its boisterous preparations. The Ga community looks forward to the coming of this cultural event with great expectation and joy because of its historical importance.

The Ga States can now fully embrace the celebrations and traditional practices associated with the Homowo festival. Soon, the excitement of this special occasion will fill the air with the sound of kpokpoi, and the captivating beats of drums will captivate the ears.
