One of Ghana’s most influential rappers, Sarkodie has stirred political conversations with a biting commentary on the NPP’s crushing defeat in the 2014 elections and their subsequent return to opposition.
The rapper took to social media to reflect on the political shift, mocking the NPP’s current standing in Ghana’s political landscape.
“Back to gari soaking like we never left,” Sarkodie wrote in his post, a phrase that quickly caught the attention of his fans and critics alike.
The phrase is widely understood as a direct jab at the NPP’s return to opposition after losing power to the NDC in 2014.
“Gari soaking,” a popular Ghanaian snack, is often associated with difficult times, where individuals opt for a humble, budget-friendly meal, thus implying that the NPP’s return to the opposition is akin to falling back to basic struggles after their defeat.

Sarkodie’s political commentary, though subtle, wasn’t lost on his followers. The rapper has long been a vocal critic of the political scene, especially when it comes to addressing issues related to governance and leadership.
However, his recent remark raised eyebrows, particularly among his critics who have long accused him of staying silent during the NPP’s time in power despite his previous critiques of Mahama/Mills’ government.
During the administration of the NDC, Sarkodie had been vocal in his dissatisfaction with the government’s performance, often using his music to address issues like corruption, governance, and mismanagement.
However, as the NDC handed over power in 2016, Sarkodie’s political silence became noticeable, leading some to accuse him of double standards.
