The National Communications Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has alleged that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) attempted to bribe James Gyakye Quayson not to run in the by-election.

He stated that the government threatened to throw him in jail if he didn’t stop fighting for his constituents and that Quayson had shown an unwavering devotion to and affection for them.

Sammy Gyamfi wrote on Facebook about Gyakye Quayson’s personal commitment and determination to fight for justice despite every obstacle, even at the risk of losing his freedoms.

“They tried to bribe him to back off. When they failed, they threatened him with jail. But in all these things, he was unwavering in his commitment and love for his people. Always calm but confident; humble but courageous; sober but inspiring; meek but fearless.”

“His personal conviction and determination to fight for justice against all odds, even at the risk of losing his civil liberties, is the reason we are smiling today,” he stated.

The difference between his votes and the results in 2020 is greater than 1,300. Mr. Gyakye Quayson won that election with 17,498 votes, defeating his opponent, Abena Durowaa Mensah of the NPP, who received 14,193 votes in 2020

On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the election for a seat in parliament to James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who received 17,245 votes (57.56 percent) to Opoku’s 12,630 votes (42.15); Sefenu Bernice Enyonam of the Liberal People’s Party (LPG) received 87 votes (0.29 percent).
