According to a publication by Myjoyonline, a total of 15 people in Atwedie, located in the Asante Akyem South Municipality of the Ashanti region, have been admitted to the Juaso Government hospital after consuming a meal of rice and beans, commonly known as ‘waakye’.

Among the victims is Maame Gariwa, the vendor of the waakye, who was also rushed to the hospital after experiencing severe stomach pains subsequent to consuming the food on Monday.

Several victims, in their accounts to Adom News, reported suffering from acute diarrhoea and other symptoms following the consumption of the meal. One of the victims mentioned that he initially experienced stomach pains, which later escalated to diarrhoea, but did not initially consider it to be a serious issue.

He further stated that if it were not for the prompt action of his siblings in rushing him to the hospital, the consequences could have been fatal. However, some residents, who are regular customers, expressed shock at the incident and suspected foul play aimed at sabotaging Maame Gariwa’s business.

They emphasized that the popular food establishment has been operating for more than two decades with an excellent reputation.

Maame Gariwa, the waakye vendor, who was barely able to speak, pleaded with the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and bring the culprits to justice. In the meantime, a number of the affected individuals have received medical treatment and have been discharged.
