On August 31, 2023, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II enstooled Nana Bona Kessetare II as the Abirahene, the leader of the Abira Traditional Area.
This appointment marks the second such installation in recent months, following five instances of destoolment by the Ashanti Kingdom’s overlord. During the enstoolment ceremony, Nana Bona Kessetare II took an oath of allegiance to the Asantehene, as seen in a video shared by Opemsuuo Radio, based in Kumasi.
Holding a sword aloft, Abirahene Kessetare II pledged his commitment to serve his community with the utmost dedication.
Prior to administering the oath, the Asantehene offered counsel to the newly appointed chief, emphasizing the importance of honesty and loyalty to the Ashanti territory. Additionally, he encouraged the Abirahene’s kinsmen to provide their unwavering support in his new leadership role, with the aim of enhancing the well-being of the people of Abira.
Relatedly, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II back in May this year destooled Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman, the chief of Antoa.
The ruling was issued by the Asantehene, who happens to be the President of the Kumasi Traditional Council during his first meeting on May 29, 2023, after returning from a journey to the United Kingdom.
The chief reportedly appointed his nephew to succeed him while he was still alive, going against the traditionally established and approved protocols.
He disparaged the King when asked by his kinsmen and elders to ask Otumfuo’s consent.
Otumfuo ordered his destoolment after hearing his case on Monday night. In the town, the destoolment rites are currently taking place.
According to Graphics Online, additional offences, such as several land sales, are the basis for the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s decision to destool Antoahene.
Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman had been on the stool for 23 years.
