Matilda Amissah Arthur, the wife of late Vice President of Ghana, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur , has spoken up about how she repeatedly requested him to resign from the role.
She claims she insisted on this multiple times, but each time her husband flatly rejected her advice.
Matilda Amissah Arthur revealed this information in an interview with JoyNews’ PM Express Personality Profile that has not yet aired.
When asked by host Aisha Ibrahim if she ever wished her husband would retire because of the difficult nature of his position, she replied, “Many times.”
Exactly five years ago, on June 29, 2018, the Vice President and head of the economic management team for Ghana under John Dramani Mahama, Mr. Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur, passed away unexpectedly during an exercise workout session.
When Ghana’s first sitting president, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, passed away in office, former President John Dramani Mahama appointed Amissah-Arthur as Vice President.
About Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur
Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur was a prominent economic figure in Ghana. Before becoming Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, he served as the Bank of Ghana’s Governor.
Amissah-Arthur earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1974 and his Master of Science in Economics in 1980. He worked in the Ministry of Finance, the Ghana Commercial Bank, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, the Ghana National Procurement Agency, the Ghana Supply Commission, and the University of Ghana before becoming Governor.
Between the years of 1983 and 1997, he served in a number of administrative roles at the Ministry of Finance (now known as the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning). From 1980 to 1988, he taught economics at the University of Ghana. From 1975 to 1975, he worked there as a research assistant.
When the university was shut down in 1983–1984 because of demonstrations, he was called to assist the Minister of Finance in the PNDC government. He served in this role until 1986, when he was promoted to the position of Deputy Minister of Finance.
He served in this role until 1993, and then again in the National Democratic Congress government from 1993 until 1997. In each position, he was in charge of policymaking, financial management, and keeping tabs on government spending.
After leaving government service in 1997, he took on a variety of consulting projects for clients such as Sigma One Corporation, the Danish Foreign Ministry, the World Bank, and the Dutch government.
Following a restructuring of the nation’s political leadership that John Atta Mills, Ghana’s then-president, had ordered, Amissah-Arthur succeeded Dr. Paul A. Acquah as Governor of the Bank of Ghana on October 1, 2009. He had a wife and two kids.
Amissah-Arthur passed away at the 37 Military Hospital on June 29, 2018, after collapsing at the Air Force Gym. On July 27, 2018, there was a state burial at the Accra International Conference Centre.
