In the debut episode of the Girls Who Cook Podcast, co-hosts Ama Governor and Marintia Eiko introduced themselves and shared their unique perspectives, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting and dynamic series.
“Welcome, everyone! This is our first episode, guys,” Ama said, her nerves clearly showing as she laughed, “I’m overcome with nerves! Let’s try this again.” After a few attempts to get the intro just right, the duo finally managed to kick off the episode with laughter and excitement.
“I’m Amma, and my full name is El Amama Governor ABAB, and I’m 26 years old,” Ama started, introducing herself to listeners. “I’m a lawyer,” she continued, “much to the dismay of a lot of my haters,” before jokingly adding, “I’m also a YouTuber and a social media influencer—though I’ve been on a break for two years.”
Ama then took the opportunity to share her personal passions, stating, “I am also a pan-Africanist revolutionary.
“My whole entire existence is committed to the African struggle.” She also mentioned being a feminist and queer rights advocate, solidifying the core of her identity and values.
Next up, Marintia introduced herself, explaining her background: “I’m 25 years old. I actually met Ama doing YouTube about two years ago,” she began. “Funny enough, when Ama took a break from YouTube, I took one too,” Marintia said with a smile.
“I even fled the country—no, seriously, I moved to Japan!” She went on to talk about her well-known YouTube content, sharing her memorable journey of flying across the globe for a date in Switzerland and her viral videos where Japanese people react to Afrobeat music.
“I also have a coconut farm in Japan,” Marintia added, hinting at some of her more unexpected endeavors.
While Marintia’s YouTube content had captivated audiences, her recent absence raised questions.
Ama teased her about it, “There’s a part of Marintia over these last two years that we haven’t got to see… we’ll talk about how she landed herself in many jobs and came back to Ghana to film with me!”
Both of them agreed that their break from YouTube was significant, but they were excited to share their personal stories with their audience, especially in this first podcast episode.
As the conversation deepened, Ama reflected on the unpredictability of life, “In the last two years, we’ve experienced a lot—much of which will unfold as we dive into the episodes,” she teased.
The duo gave listeners a glimpse into the adventures they had during their time off the screen, including the highs and lows of life and work.
“We’ve seen a lot of memes about people going to jail after starting a podcast,” Ama said, her tone serious. “I feel like we’re lucky though, because Marintia went to jail before the podcast started!” Marintia quickly responded, “Jail is a serious thing, guys.
It was crazy!” She shared how she experienced everything from the cells to the coaches, with Ama humorously mentioning how she was outside, looking in. “We have pictures and videos of everything,” Ama promised, creating suspense for the next episodes.
As the episode continued, the hosts discussed the broader purpose of their podcast. “What is Girls Who Cook all about?” Ama asked, looking to Marintia for an answer.
Marintia replied, “We’re two girls in our 20s, taking on English-speaking Africa and Asia. I’m from Japan and Ghana, and Ama’s from Ghana. Together, we’re blending the best of both continents.”
