All tailors I knew were poor- Veekee James on initial fashion designer snub

Veekee James has said she initially snubbed the idea of becoming a fashion designer due to the negative perceptions she had about the industry.

Despite this, she is now a highly successful fashion designer.

The beautiful Nigeria woman was recently featured on CNN’s Rising Voices, a program showcasing exceptional Africans, after dressing celebrities at the AMVCAs.

Her story, along with that of designer Andrea Iyamah, who opened a store in New York City, resonated with viewers.

VeeKee shared that her journey began in Ajegunle, a disadvantaged area of Lagos, where she witnessed the struggles of young girls and boys.

Her perspective changed when she pursued a university education in Akwa Ibom.

Although she started with makeup and hairstyling in school, it consumed all her time, leading her to drop out and return home.

Originally aspiring to be a medical doctor, VeeKee was discouraged by her mother’s financial struggles as a fashion designer.

Despite this, she now takes pride in dressing celebrities like Osas Ighodaro, Bonang Matheba, and Jackie Aina.

VeeKee’s designs may be pricey, starting at one million Naira, but she sees this as just the beginning of her journey towards greater success.

Veekee James began learning the art of clothing design from her mother, Esther James, at a young age. In 2019, she was motivated by her mother to establish her fashion label, “Veekee James.”

Initially, she launched her brand with a fashion store on the Lagos Mainland but later moved to Lagos Island in pursuit of greater opportunities. Over time, she expanded her business to include Veekee James Man, a men’s fashion line, and Shoprikan, a women’s fashion line.

In 2022, she received the AMVCA and Hercomony Awards for Best Fashion Designer of the Year. The following year, she won three awards, including the Future Awards Africa.

In February 2023, she hosted her first masterclass, which assisted over 100 fashion professionals from various countries in honing their skills. In March 2023, she launched her podcast, “Bible Stories With Veekee James.”
