Alan Kyeremanten has mentioned that one of the huge flaws of Ghana’s political system is the ‘winner takes all’ phenomenon, and that he intends to abolish it if elected as new president of Ghana.

The former Minister of Trade and Industry said this in a speech streamed live on social media and other mainstream TV stations shortly after he resigned from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and also declared his intention to contest the upcoming 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate.

Additionally, he expressed his decision to change the political status quo by moving Ghana beyond the duopoly of the two main political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

At a press conference held on September 25, 2023, in Accra, Mr. Kyeremanten stated that the NPP’s failure to address his and his supporters’ concerns led to his decision to leave the party and run as an independent in the upcoming presidential election. He feels that the party has not treated him and others who publicly support him fairly.

He said;

“This will break divisive partisanship in governance in Ghana, and bring an end to the “winner takes all” political syndrome. There is the need to promote reforms in the internal democratic processes and procedures of all political parties, such as introducing ‘One Man One Vote’ (OMOV) to ensure inclusiveness, and reduce the effect of monetisation in politics.”
