Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, has commissioned the Common User Factory for farmer-owners of the Savelugu Municipality and its surroundings in the Northern Region under the government’s One District, One Factory initiative.

The facility, funded under the programme, can turn out 1.5 and 2.8 tonnes of processed rice per hour.

Mr. Kyerematen swore in a nine-member board of directors to monitor the administration and operations of the plant to make sure it runs smoothly and accomplishes its objectives.

The Rural Enterprises Programme (REP) and GRATIS Foundation will support local enterprises including the factory in building capacity.

Akwasi Attah Antwi, REP’s National Director, said the factory will employ 118 people, including management specialists, factory floor employees, and plantation workers on the nucleus rice field.

“Over 754 farmers in the Savelugu Municipality and nearby areas would be directly involved to supply rice to the factory.”

Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu, Northern Regional Minister, said the facility will spur regional growth and improve food security.

Hajia Ayishetu Seidu, Savelugu Municipal Chief Executive, said it would reduce unemployment and encourage young people to go into agriculture.

Alhaji Sayibu Braimah, the factory’s Board Chairman, promised to work effectively to ensure the factory’s success.

The program developed similar facilities in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region, Sefwi Akontombra District of the Western North Region, Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region, and Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Kyerematen is expected to open more 1D1F facilities in other regions in the coming months.
